​Dr. Johnnie Bankens is a pedagogue and teacher who is most rare to encounter in modern times. He is an example of someone who is able to put all selfishness and preconceived understanding aside in order to listen to what is in front of him to a very advanced degree. During my training at Southeastern Louisiana University, Johnnie worked with me to refine my instrument, and he also gave me an in-depth understanding of pedagogy and vocal function which I have carried with me throughout my singing journey and teaching practices. Of the many principals that I learned from him, perhaps the most important is the idea of individuality - which is incredibly neglected in our generation. I know from my own experience that any singer who has the privilege of working with Johnnie will receive tutelage that doesn’t confine them to a box or someone else's false conception of what singing “should” sound like.
